Fish for Germany, Europe and the world
Building on over 100 years of expertise as one of Germany’s most important fishing hubs, Cuxhaven now boasts sophisticated facilities and infrastructure for the modern food industry.
The fishing industry has many facets. In Cuxhaven, the fishing industry stands first and foremost for tradition and quality. It’s about fresh-caught fish from the North Sea and the Atlantic, local coastal fish, and delicacies like North Sea shrimp. It also includes frozen and smoked fish, convenience products, canned fish, marinades, and much more. All areas and processes of fish processing are covered in Cuxhaven. Quality standards are high, and the numbers speak for themselves.
Around 40 fish-processing companies employ more than 1,800 people, both on MSC-certified fishing vessels and in processing plants on land.
Nowhere else in Germany is as much fish processed as here. Around 100 million cans of fish are produced annually in Cuxhaven. Up to 40,000 tons of goods are stored in the cold storage and freezer facilities at any given time, 75% of which are frozen fish and seafood.
As one of Germany’s largest fishing hubs, Cuxhaven is also a key hub for the marketing of seafood from around the world and has built up a high level of expertise in fresh produce logistics. Products are shipped to customers throughout Europe. Only a small portion enters the local market here, ending up in specialty fish shops, restaurants, or on Cuxhaven’s famous “Fischmeile” (Fish Mile).
