Pioneer in sustainability

The global potential for renewable energy is enormous. In purely mathematical terms, solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and biomass energy sources provide thousands of times more energy than the world’s population needs.

This enormous potential is not yet being utilized as effectively as would be necessary to achieve the internationally agreed-upon climate goals. When the “Renewables Conference” took place in Bonn more than 20 years ago, the triumph of renewable energy could only be imagined. Today, solar and wind energy are price-competitive with fossil fuels and firmly established on global markets. And Cuxhaven is doing its part...

Next level energy transition

Renewable energy is becoming increasingly important in light of the serious consequences of climate change. In Cuxhaven, the city has long since set its course toward green energy. Alongside the core industries of port operations, logistics, tourism, and the fishing and food sectors, the renewable energy sector is undoubtedly one of the key industries in the region. Leading the way is the wind energy sector—but that’s not all...

The enormous number and density of wind turbines offer significant potential for the production of “green hydrogen” (power-to-gas; power-to-X). By converting temporary energy surpluses into transportable hydrogen, renewable energy can be utilized independently of urban infrastructure—without a connection to the power grid.

The city of Cuxhaven recognized hydrogen as an opportunity for the Cuxhaven offshore hub quite early on and, in addition to intensive networking, commissioned a “Concept for the Use of Hydrogen in Cuxhaven and the Elbe-Weser Region,” a “Cuxhaven Hydrogen Position Paper,” and, in early 2023, a “Hydrogen Master Plan.”
