First place in fish processing

Fishing and food industries

As one of the most significant fishing locations in Germany, established as a result of expertise which dates back over 100 years, the economic region of Cuxhaven now has highly sophisticated superstructure and infrastructure systems at its disposal.

A role-model for quality and sustainability

The fishing industry has many faces. In Cuxhaven, the fishing industry is primarily a symbol of tradition and quality. The area is best known for freshly caught fish from the North Sea and Atlantic, indigenous coastal varieties of fish and delicacies such as North Sea prawns, but also for frozen and smoked fish products, convenience products, preserves, marinades and much more. All areas and processes involved in processing fish are covered in Cuxhaven. The quality is of the highest standard and the numbers speak for themselves.

Around 40 companies involved in fish processing employ over 1,400 people working either on MSC certified fishing vessels or in processing plants on land. No other place in Germany processes as much fish. Around 100 million fish preserves are produced in Cuxhaven every year. At any given time, up to 40,000 tonnes of produce are stored in the refrigerator and freezer storage houses, 75% of which comprises frozen fish and seafood.

As one of the largest fishing locations in Germany, Cuxhaven is also an important hub for the sale of fish products from all over the world and an established centre for expertise in fresh product logistics. From here, goods are shipped to customers all over Europe. Only a small proportion of this ends up on the market or in specialty fishmongers, restaurants or at Cuxhaven's famous "Fischmeile".

The second mainstay of the food industry in Cuxhaven is its agriculture and livestock farming. Our region has always been among the leading sources of milk and dairy products meaning cattle farms and feed crop production are of great importance to the economy. Traditional and organic agriculture for fruit and vegetable production also play a significant role in the region. Last but not least, food supplement manufacturers also support the various industries in the region. Significant investment in the expansion of facilities and food technologies has helped to make the food industry in Cuxhaven more sustainable and competitive into the future.
