Cuxland – Vacation Destination Between the North Sea, the Elbe and the Weser.
Setting out on foot from Cuxhaven, one can wander along the shore at low tide to the point where the Elbe and the Weser meet in the North Sea. There one can visit the island of Neuwerk, which is part of the city of Hamburg. And these walks are one of the loveliest experiences in Cuxland, which in recent years has developed into an unusually attractive and ever-changing vacation landscape. The tourism in the county is marked by the North Sea coast and the Wattenmeer National Park, along with the sea spa Cuxhaven and the resorts of Dorum, Wremen, and Otterndorf.
Cuxland is one of the many diverse holiday destinations in Germany. It is characterized by green marshlands, bogs, and sandy moors. Great seas and small rivers, canals, and forests provide a landscape that invites biking, sailing, or horseback riding. The fresh-air health resort Wingst, located in a wooded vacation area, is close to a zoo and an amusement park. The park features a summer-toboggan run and wild water rides, and is home to an internationally known camilla cultivation center.
In Cuxhaven, the largest North Sea Spa, there is a 12 kilometer long sandy beach. At the historical marina of Alte Liebe you can watch ships from the surrounding areas sail by. Whether it’s a cruise ship, ferry, catamaran, cutter, tourboat, or cargo ship (sometimes even a wind jammer!), nearly all ships going to Scandinavia, the Baltic countries, or Hamburg pass by Cuxland. Especially worth seeing are the small cutters and sports boats harboured along the Weser and the Elbe. In Dorum you can tour the Old Oberversand Lighthouse.
The spas in Cuxland offer pleasure with a capital “P.” On the shores of Wurster Land and the sea spa in Otterndorf one can relax in luxury. Nearby, Otterndorf offers sightseeing in the Old Town. The Moor-spa Bad Bederkesa is an especially beautiful vacation spot on the sea with the same name. While there you can visit the castle near the Aqua Vitales thermal baths, a jewel among the castles and museums in northwest Germany.
The same can be said of the castle in Hagen, found between Bremen and Bremerhaven. The castle was originally the summer seat of the Bishops of Bremen. Today it is a museum, and host to many different events.
In recent years Cuxhaven has established itself as a center for various beach sports. Volleyball, basketball, football, handball, and American football events have been taking place here for years. The elite come to compete for championships and cups at the “Stadium on the Sea” in the Dunes Health Resort.
There are many, many possibilities for spending your free time in Cuxland, such as a spell on a farm, horseback-riding, tennis, golf, flying, watersports, fishing, and deep-sea fishing, camping and caravaning, visiting museums, sightseeing, and exhibitions. You may also wish to take a tour of churches and organs. With all these possibilities, everyone can find their ideal holiday in Cuxland.
