The region of Cuxhaven benefits from the accumulation of companies specialized in the field of human and veterinary medicine. Furthermore, the region hosts companies involved in the health sector, which complete the business landscape.

One of the most significant landmarks of the economic development of the region is the BCC BioCenter Cuxhaven.
The activities of Cuxhaven´s biotechnology focus on the „red“ branch of biotechnology.

The main goals of the BCC are:

1. The creation of a communication network and a competence center for the development and production if immunizing products (vaccines, therapeutic proteins, diagnostic products)
2. The initiation of and participation in regional, national and international F + E projects
3. The promotion of joint projects between veterinary and human medicine in the fields of molecular biology, gene technology, nano technology, engineering and chemistry
4. The establishment of further biotechnological companies on the BCC campus

The development and production of biotechnological products will be accelerated by the positive conditions of the BCC’s infrastructure, which include:

1. Buildings that consist of technically autarkic parts in GMP-design, which may be extended in various ways
2. Media supply specifically designed for pharmacological purposes, up to m2 standards (steam, water, gas, compressed air etc.)

Due to the maritime character of the regional business landscape, Cuxhaven has much to offer also with respect to the development of a “blue” branch of biotechnology. Next to a number of companies that are specialized in this field, further projects may be realized in cooperation with the BioNord-Zentrum that is located in Bremerhaven and thus close to the technical university.
